Lately I have been pondering the music I listen to. Specifically, the *languages* I listen to music in.

I count 9 12 languages in the music I listen to:

-English (duh)
-German (I know, big shocker)
-Japanese (another shocker)
-French (probably not a surprise)
-Spanish
-Italian
-Russian
-Korean
-Zulu
-Latin
-Tibetan
-Gaelic

What about you? How many languages do you listen to music in? Anything not on my list?

And no, these languages are *not* the native tongue for at least half of the artists singing in them. Some of the Italian *is* Opera, in case you are wondering, but not *all* of it.

[edited to add Latin, Gaelic, and Tibetan. I forgot about the chants I have. DOH!!]

Let's see...

English
German
French
Spanish
Some Japanese
A various assortment of Middle Eastern languages
Some East Indian languages (Hindu, not sure of others)
African (no I'm not sure of the languages)
Does Regge count - Rastafarian?

That's what I know off the top of my head...

Arabic and Chinese would be my additions to the list.
Oh, and apparently Turkish, when I check one of the CDs.

Thanks, I didn't realize just how wide my music collection was getting.

A friend of mine would like to add two to your list.
Italian, and Latin.
Russian, and Old Slavinic.
If you have Gregorian Chants, you have the Latin.
If you have any Russian Orthodox chants, you have the Old Slavinic.

DOH I also have Tibetan!!! I forgot about the chants!!!

and Italian and Russian are on the list.

I don't have Old Slavinic. I do have Latin though.

Aside from many of the languages already mentioned, I've found in my collection some Dutch, Greek, Icelandic, Romanian (aside from Dragostea Din Tei), Urdu, Punjabi, and probably a few others that aren't occurring to me at the moment.

Also, does Lisa Gerrard's work count as its own separate language? ;)

I'm surprised nobody has spoken up with Portuguese -- I have several Brazilian CDs. I have some Tatar stuff... and the one Romanian single that lots of us have. ;) I have Icelandic, too, for sure.

I lack the focus to properly catalog right now. Maybe in a bit. ;)
