Why I don't eat at Minnie's Cafe now
Jul. 8th, 2002 03:45 amSpydr and I have been eating there for about 8 years, as this is how long his best friend has been working there. This has always been the Minnie's on 1st and Denny downtown, not the one on the hill. We have been there through several staff changes, including kitchen staff. In 8 years the menu hasn't really changed. I have things I like on that menu, but I have learned the way I like them to be, and the way I really don't:
I like the Pasticcio, but without Pineapple as I am severely allergic to pineapple, it gives me horrible blisters on more sensitive tissues, or if I get too much juice on my skin. So I can't even have my food touch pineapple and still be able to eat it.
I like the Lime Chicken, but I like the pasta to have no sauce or anything. I like the noodles, they are tasty, but the sauce is too spicy for my taste and I don't like a lot of herbs on my plain pasta. and the biggest thing is that I like my chicken to be cooked all the way through. no pink meat. and the description says it is broiled and sprinkled with lime juice, but lately it has come with Swiss on top and no lime (what the fuck?!).
I like the raspberry baby. I prefer to have the sauce and the whip cream in separate containers and not on top of the baby. If the sauce is on the baby, I end up with WAY more sauce than I want on it, and the whole baby becomes soupy -- EW.
This is what I like to eat there. I get the same thing almost every time. (breakfast I always get the waffle breakfast scrambled or the eggs benedict). But if there is a problem I will tell the staff what it is when they ask me "how is everything". If they want to play stupid lip service games do it with people that aren't as regular as we are, cause I will tell you if it isn't right or not cooked. (which happened way too many times in the last several months for my taste really). And really, I am always nice and patient about my order cause I know it is complex. And if something is messed up because I ordered it wrong I will state that right off the bat. But it isn't like I never get these things so they don't know how my I normally eat. So I always feel obligated to explain if I am eating a LOT less than normal, I mean it is obvious *something* is wrong... and besides I will not knowingly lie, to anyone.
So one day when Spydr was waiting to meet me after work there, before I arrived someone on the staff went to him to discuss my ordering with him. They asked him to tell me to cool the complicated orders. They told him that the kitchen doesn't like special orders or changes and they throw things around when they get them. (how this is my fault I fail to see actually). They told him that they were considering refusing me service because of it. So when I got there he wanted to leave immediately. And he told me about all of this in the car. He has always teased me about being high maintenance in this area, so he brought it up as me knowing how this has always bothered him, well it bothers others... and went into the details. I said I didn't think I needed to apologize for sending back pink chicken. and he agreed that I didn't need to apologize for that, or for any of it actually.
The end result of the conversation is that we agreed it would be best if I just didn't eat there anymore. The cooks that came down from the hill are making things *their* way, which I do not like, and this will save everyone a lot of heartache.
except for that nagging feeling that they actually dislike me enough to refuse service to me. Even for something as simple as a blueberry 7up. And I have always been nice to them and treated them all fairly and like people and friends.
It really just hurt my feelings to have it happen at all. I feel like I was betrayed by something or someone. being reminded of it in the car on the way home made me very very sad. And if I hadn't had such a lovely time the whole rest of the evening, since the 4th really, I would probably be in tears right now. I feel hurt and mad, every other staff change group has just remembered my order and not taken it personally if the food was off once or twice. I certainly haven't taken it as a personal slight in the past, altho now I am wondering if the food problems recently haven't been on purpose.
It just all is such a big fucking drama. I hate drama. I hate that they are having drama about *me*. Jesus, I am nice to fucking everyone, even people that fuckheads to me.
As a friend of mine said, "why do people have to suck so much?"
I HAVE ALWAYS ALWAYS HATED THE DOWNTOWN MINNIE'S
Date: 2002-07-08 04:05 am (UTC)Fuck Minnie's, the Cap Hill one was vaguely tolerable because it was close, but the food sucked and the street freaks stunk up the place, but at least I didn't have to put up with some asshole waiter in a goddamn turtleneck giving me the bare minimum of service while chatting to his friends at the counter.

Date: 2002-07-08 01:24 pm (UTC)I always liked the one on Broadway, because it was familiar and actually lent itself to interesting conversations with people. The food was cooked better and they actually tried to help you. The only downside there was that the management always understaffed the place, in an effort to make money. (yeah, figure that out.)
If you want a good alternative for all-hours food, try out Stella's in the U-District. They're about the same price as Minnie's, better food and have all sorts of wonderful Italian and/or breakfast dishes. Plus, the staff there is cute *and* friendly. :)

It's OK to be high maintenance, especially if you're polite and tip well.

Minnies... could never put my finger on it, though.
Still, I gave the Broadway Minnies a chance --- YUCK!
WORSE! Nasty place, terrible service, bad atmosphere.
And my friend reported that the manager or owner was
seen DELIBERATELY TRYING TO TRAP A LIVE CROW IN HIS
DUMPSTER. The place is cursed, as far as I'm concerned.
Cursed.
