Let me state clearly what my position is on Government, once at for all.

I have an issue with *any* Government or Politician who is more interested in acquisition and capital gain than in the lives of their people (or those whom they represent). And while there are subtle complexities to many issues, there are some pretty large and obvious ones that really boil down to these choices.

That is all.

there are a few out there that actually care about the people they represent. Most of them are in small or local governments. There are several countries in the world who have governments that I can support. It can happen.

hahahhaha

well, I like Adam Smith (South King County Politician and good guy). And I like Shirley Doty (WA State of Representatives Rep). There are a few others out there that I like as well, but they are not really part of the US Government. ;)

Well said.
I find that most people who seek positions of power and influence are doing so for selfish reasons. The ones who do it for the good of the population they represent are few and far between.
*sigh*

indeed. There are some governments that are centered around the principals of being for the people, and a couple of them actually *stick to it*. But they are mostly very small quiet countries.

Uh huh. It's probably the lack of desire to prick wave with the big boys and concentrate on building a functional, cohesive, and productive society.
Gosh, what an idea. ;)

Yep, i still want to move to New Zealand. :D

Governance and Religion

Alright. So. Blake's view on governments (and we might as well stick some views on religion here too):

Sometime about, oh, say 20,000 years ago this hypothetical guy named Og got tired of hunting all the time. Og was bigger than Oog, Ug, and Uff, so he threatened them all to give him his fair share of their meat and their women's gathered veggies and such. Uff didn't like this idea, so Og beat him up. Uff fell in line. After a while some other group came along and tried to take all of their stuff away. Og liked his setup, so he killed all the invaders, with a little help from Oog, Ug, and Uff. This was the first hierarchical government, and it has been copied and permutated for a long time now, but its still basically how it works. The people being governed do what they are supposed to out of fear of the government, but more so out of fear of invaders.

Uff was still kind of pissed off about the entire situation. He didn't like the whole working thing any more than Og did. He was smarter than Og, and much smarter than Oog and Ug. So one day Uff stopped working and started talking about how things must be if Og, Oog and Ug wanted to be happy after they died. Og, Oog and Ug were startled by this idea. They had never thought about what happens after life, and they asked Uff how he new about these things. Uff told them that he talked to spirits, and that some of those spirits were gods and would protect them not only in the next life, but this one as well, as long as they took good care of Uff. Og was suspicious of this, and Uff, being smart, said that the gods had proclaimed that Og was their chosen leader of the people. This made Og happy, and he gladly played along with Uff from that point on, making sure the rest did as well.

So, really government and religion were both thought up to keep lazy people from working too hard. The fact that now they seem to be trying to make all this big busy work for themselves means they just lost sight of the goal. Governement works best when it does as little as possible to keep a majority of the people happy. Religion works best when it is absolute and there is no questioning the priest. I definitely have a problem with both systems, especially in their current forms. But it has been worse in the past.

Thats how I see it. I've got a pretty good view from over here too.

I see some of them as having started as more of an extended family that all turned to either the mother or father to protect, organize, and care for the entire lot of them. Some parents were better than others so they got a lot of random people joining into their family in order to be part of the strong collective.

just my schtick.

Yeah. But "Dad" was usually bigger than everybody else. Or at least better at getting everyone together to beat the snot out of the other family over the hill that kept stealing their sheep. Just because my description was kinda brutal doesn't mean there weren't some more or less nice ways for it to happen. As you can tell though, my view on human nature has always been a bit bleak. The entire might equals right thing. Or, if the might has one for a bit and a society is forgetting that it is happy and safe and doesn't need the stupidness, they start voting for the bread and circuses (read gladiatorial combat, which is bad, so today we just throw and televise a war).

Ugh... Ok, I'm going to get off this topic before I get any more pessimistic. I really am in quite a good mood today. <devilishly handsome grin>
