so the IT guys were here from California last week, and installed my cd burner... but somewhere in that process, my headphones no longer get all of the sound channeled to them. For some reason, if I plug my headphones into the front of my machine at the headphone jack, I get music in them *and* coming out of my computer speaker. This is a big unhappy, cause it means that I can't listen to music at work, like I was. It means lots of long long afternoons until I can fix it.

anybody know where the secret button may be hiding?

otherwise I will have to break down and get some headphones that plug into the sound card in back. bleh... that would be a major pain in the ass...

Hope this helps

Actually this sounds familiar, there is a cable that goes out the back of the CD Player/ Burner and to the motherboard.

If you are allowed open the case look for the string-width narrow cable with a flat 1/2 inch connector on the end, it is probably flopping around loose. Plug it in to the only place on the back of the CDBurner it will fit, should not take too much force.

Mila's husband is right. Your old CD-ROM probably didn't have the interior audio cable from the back of the CD-ROM to the sound card plugged in, so it would not play sound to the audio card. The IT guys probably hooked up the new CD-R properly, including that cable.

You've got a couple of options. You can either open up the case, and disconnect that cable, which will prevent the CD-R from sending audio info to the soundcard. Or (and this is a better option in my opinion) just get a set of speakers with a headphone jack on the front of them. All of the ones at my office have them. That way if a set of headphones is plugged into the jack on the front of the speakers, sound goes only to the headphones.

Oh hey, I think I will take that option. It would be less invasive, and when The Big Boss is away we could play our tunes in a better way. :)

Thanks!!

add you?

click on the speaker icon next to the time in the lower right corner of the screen, check the mute box
this will stop sound from coming out the speakers, and not effect sound coming through the cd-rom headphone jack

if you want other sounds coming out the speakers to still be heard, doubleclick on the speaker icon, in the mixer dialogue, check the mute box for cd player
