Mt. St. Helens -
Sep. 30th, 2004 07:01 pmSince everyone seems to be all excited about it. And talking about it. And talking about the last eruption in 1980. I figured I would post a link to my memories of it, that I posted last May.
Read if you are interested. As a teaser - I was living in Yakima at the time (where we got a few feet of ash) and I was camping in the mountains the day she blew. And yes, it was *those* mountains. We weren't super close to her, but we were between her and Yakima - a little closer to her than to Yakima even.
anyway, check it out if you haven't and are curious. and yes, it is a public entry and so is this.

Date: 2004-09-30 08:40 pm (UTC)I was about seven months in utero at that time; my parents were still in bed at our house in Bothell, and they (and my sister, almost three years old at the time) heard/felt the eruption. My dad thought it was a sonic boom. I don't know how much ash they got over here, if any.
Eeee! I'm excited for it to erupt. Even if it's not a big eruption. I think I just like natural disasters. (I'm sure that that would change were I ever in the midst of a big one.)

Date: 2004-09-30 10:11 pm (UTC)I have lived through volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, forrest fires, floods, blizzard conditions... bleh. Mostly I find them *tedious*. They always seem to take a lot less time than the people talking about then afterwards. While they are happening I mostly find myself waiting until it is over and they have stopped.
The last big earthquake we had, when it started I was configuring 3 computers on my desk. I took the time to shut them all down and make sure the power strips were shut off as well. By the time I was done, so was the quake. I did not want there to be a fire from a blown circuit.
This would be either the reason why, or proof that my feathers are not easily ruffled.

Date: 2004-09-30 10:17 pm (UTC)One of those silly little things that no one really mentions now.
To this day I try to keep a package of masks in the house. ;)
Re: Yakima
Date: 2004-09-30 11:33 pm (UTC)...and I keep particle masks in my house, too. *grins*

Re: Yakima
Date: 2004-10-02 03:35 pm (UTC)I have heard of YOU, of course, I just didn't mention the connection because I was not his girlfriend proper like you are, it was more an on again off again clandestine thing, and I didn't want to invade his privacy so to speak, I didn't know if he had ever mentioned me.
Ten years! You must have talents. :)
Re: Yakima
Date: 2004-10-02 03:55 pm (UTC)They are OLD pictures indeed.
And he does refer to you as his ex-girlfriend. Whether or not he referred to you as his girlfriend at the time, like many of us - once someone is in the distant ex state, they become an ex girl/boyfriend for convenience, if nothing else.
So, in case that wasn't clear enough, he *has* mentioned you. :)
As for talents, apparently I *do*. ;) We have our share (sometimes more than our share) of problems in our lives and in our relationship, but we have found that we can work through most of the stuff together, and wait the rest of the stuff out. ;) If we were the type of people who were into marriage we would have been married a long time ago. We pretty much think of ourselves in that way, we just have no interest in having a ceremony or making it *legal*.
It is nice to be able to say Hi finally. :)
I hope things are well in your corner of the universe too.
Re: Yakima
Date: 2004-10-04 02:31 pm (UTC)Anyway, happy to make your acquaintance.

Date: 2004-10-04 03:02 pm (UTC)I live in Seattle now, pretty close to Staxxy actually, compared to the other places I've rented here. I've been back here nearly 4 years now. I'd moved back to Eastern Washington (meaning Yakima and Tri-Cities) to finish school and then I got a really great paying job and got distracted from my goal to get back here. Finally the opportunity presented itself and within 24 hours I had an interview and in 48 hours I had a job, and 72 hours after I got my offer, I moved to Seattle. I think that probably shows how anxious to get back here I was! haha

Re: Yakima
Date: 2004-10-01 01:04 pm (UTC)Do you still consider yourself as being 'from Yakima' or do you feel that you've been away long enough to claim Seattle as your own?
It's a little debate that I have with friends from time to time.
