Jessica had a Massive Seizure.

She had been prone to seizures for most of her life and was on medication for them. Unfortunately she was unable to afford her medication the last few months of her life. apparently it was the one she needed most of all. :(

I was just talking to a doctor friend about the need for serious reform of the healthcare system. Not being able to afford a lifesaving medication is a clear and awful example of that.

Thank you for the update. This saddens me greatly, that this could have been prevented. This also scares me, as I am 'prone to seizures', and haven't been able to find medication that works with me. Please let me know Stax, if there's anything I can do, if you need to talk or anything. *hugs*

My dad's office does their best to help people get the meds they need, keeping a hugely stocked sample room and helping people find Patient Assistance programs for just such reasons. The state of healthcare in this country has gotten shameful.

I am so sorry. That almost exact same thing happened to one of my friends a little over a year ago. She died from a spider bite that had gotten infected and she couldn't afford the antibiotics. It makes me *so* upset that we live in a society that allows this to happen, let alone turns a blind eye.

i'll second, third and fourth on the comments regarding the preventability of this situation.

if i had known that she needed meds, i would have tried to help, even tho i didnt know her. if we had known, we could have thrown a fund together with everyone's pennies.

its so sad and terribly tragic that this was preventable.

is there anyone out there that is in similar straights that we can help prevent this from happening to them?

And to think that we send soo much aid and attention to things happening on the other side of the planet. Our own loved ones die from things that could easily have been taken care of. All the medication and such that gets sent out of this country, and who is paying for all of that? I bet she did, with the money she paid in taxes. Yet, our own country would not get her medication when she needed it...
