Read this SG Thread

ok so this is something that came from a friend of mine... But really, How hard is it to take responsibility for your own language? Personal pet peeve.

It just makes me sad when people refuse to see how much they are promoting the bad ideas behind the words by accepting the common usage of them, ESPECIALLY when they admit that they do not support that bad idea.

Gleh. I just waded through a little of that mess.

My mind is muddled. But I must say that another thread
posted recently brought up a very similar feeling...
http://pub53.ezboard.com/fseagothforumfrm17.showMessage?topicID=2086.topic

I'm just tired of dealing with people who are possibly just too
stupid, probably too deep-down-ignorant, probably too messed up
emotionally, and in such powerful denial that they can repeat
and transmit ignorant, racist CRAP and go "what? What'd I say?
I don't UNDERSTAND! Are you being P.C.? It's just a word..."

Maybe when I feel stronger I'll get my patience back and once
more be up for dialogue with anyone/everyone. But not today.

Today I'm just fed up with it, and I'm not going to waste my
energy on anyone who won't do a little more work thinking.

Arg.

and this is why

I'm glad I read very very little of the SG board. Because I get to miss threads like that one; by the time I do end up hearing about it, it feels anti-climatic to post something. :)

However, your post summed up everything I'd want to say anyway. :)

:)

It's just something I feel really strongly about.

Maybe it is because I dad is both Gay and Puerto Rican, and my boyfriend is half native american.

Mostly I think it is because my mother raised me to be responsible for the words I choose to use.

*smoochies*

But yeah.

basically, what I said was that it is important to take responsibility for the words you choose, and to recognize that if the word is used in a negative connotation and it is a racially charged word then you are indeed promoting racism by using it.

I would bet it was exactly the sort of thing you have said before and will probably say again.

;)

Sometimes birds of a feather are simply responsible together.

I kinda had a feeling it would. :D

I was very tempted to post a link to your Gothic Miss Manners column on being polite and nice to each other.... But in the end I decided against it. I felt it might be too much for me to do...

I just expect people who have intelligence to be responsible for the words they use. It is certainly not as if anyone in our community is suffering from a lack of vocabulary...

OO! potential flame war! Couldn't help getting in on that one, luv.
Though my opinion takes a slightly different slant than yours, though I understand where you're coming from.

Language changes...Lets get together a list of how many everyday words are potentially offensive & derogatory to us (sinister)lefties.

I don't believe there are a bunch of bigots (or any)hanging out on Seagoth, as much as people like to think there are, & everyone is ignorant in one way or another.

Heh...

as I said in an earlier reply, I just think that people should be responsible for the words they choose.

and I do not know how Sinister came to mean left handed or vice versa..

But I did respond to your thread. :D

I think for the most part we have the same basic idea. I don't think it is ok to hate at all, unless you have a damn good reason and it's *personal*... I still won't be thrilled about the hating, but at least I will be more likely to accept it. I don't hate people who are seriously prejudiced, but they do scare me... This is why I try to educate them when I can.

Hate and words...

Date: 2002-07-25 08:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lawst.livejournal.com
Funny thing about the 2 that I don't think the users of the hateful words realise...Not only does it promote and validate the use of the word/idea outwardly, it promotes it inside too. It hangs there in the head with all of it's tags, images and labels and festers, even when it's being ignored. To put an allegory to it..it's a rottting carcass that does nothing but spread the disease. I have my own reasons to hate certain ethnic groups, yet I refuse to do it. I refuse to use the words that strip both them and myself of dignity.

Ignorance breeds fear. Fear fosters hate. Hate closes the mind to understanding and growth.

This has always been my mantra, even when the people I thought I hated were trying to kill me. When I stopped hating I was able to see it from their point of view and understand.

It's especially disturbing to see this sort of thing coming from folks in a subculture that often faces the ignorance/fear/hate cycle itself. They say "it's just a word" when they're the ones using the words...but they scream ignorance when others use hateful words for them. Either that, or they say they're immune, which is a lie.
